Postdoctoral Position in Gravitational Wave Physics

The Institute for Gravitation and the Cosmos at The Pennsylvania State University is seeking one or more Postdoctoral Scholars in gravitational-wave physics with an emphasis on LIGO data analysis and applications to multi-messenger astronomy. The Penn State LIGO group has played significant roles in all gravitational wave detections to date including the recent discovery of the binary neutron star merger, GW170817. The successful applicants are expected to help continue our strength in gravitational wave observation by contributing significantly to real-time searches for compact binary mergers and to the real-time characterization of transient noise in LIGO detectors. The successful candidates will be part of the LIGO Scientific Collaboration and contribute to the analysis of LIGO and Virgo data and to the publication of search results. These positions require a Ph.D. in physics, astronomy or a closely related field. The Penn State gravitational wave group is a vigorous, growing group that consists of faculty members Chad Hanna and B.S. Sathyaprakash, a computational scientist, two postdoctoral scholars, several graduate students and undergraduate students. Applications must be submitted electronically at https://psu.jobs/job/83476 and include a cover letter, CV and research statement. Applicants should arrange for three recommendation letters to be submitted to institute@gravity.psu.edu indicating the appropriate job number in the subject line. Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until suitable candidates are found. Flexible start dates will also be considered. For more information, please visit http://gravity.psu.edu. This is a fixed-term appointment funded for one year from date of hire with excellent possibility of re-funding.
